Sure, the presenter read the chest xray completely wrong, but it still doesn’t take away from the impressive achievement of viewing an EMR on the iPhone. It appears that the data is read-only, but the ability to rub completely from a web application is a very nice step towards continuing the incredible improvement of access to medical records for physicians.
I fortunately only had paper records as a resident for 3 months before our conversion to an EMR and am thankful that medical technology is finally starting to catch up with reality.
Although running an EMR from the iPhone is not completely a practical endeavor, I applaud the successful achievement!

The purpose of HIPAA was to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the healthcare system through the development of established health data standards and requirements for the transmission and storage of electronic health information. Currently, however, most EMR and medical transcription companies dont comply with these standards. We need to create a licencing mechanism to ensure that companies are indeed HIPAA compliant, similar to how manufacturers get ISO-9001 certified. Otherwise, the act just turns into a marketing tag line for companies.
