ePocrates on the iPhone

Update July 08:It’s out! Download epocrates for your iPhone for free here.

Update April 08: It’s not out yet, but you can see Epcrates running on the iPhone here (not in the browser but as an actual application)

I’ve been getting a few emails about whether ePocrates is going to be available for iPhone. The only information so far from ePocrates is from their FAQ:

Question

Thanks for posting about the petition!

I’ve loved my iPhone since day one. However, I still carry my Palm OS based PDA to work for ePocrates. I’ve tried ePocrates Online and Unbound Medicine’s UCentral clinical suite and have found both to be frustratingly slow via EDGE or even WiFi when compared to Palm. Because of this I’ve created a petition to encourage Apple to support 3rd party medical software that will run directly on the iPhone. Please follow the link below if you would like to sign it and leave a comment for Apple/ePocrates:

  7. Larry Meiner Says:

Well, We are waiting. I keep holding myself back from purchasing an IPhone because I need epocrates to be downloaded. Or maybe someone knows another Drug reference that IPhone will accept? Thanks.

  8. Tim W. Brann, DDS Says:

Am holding off on the Iphone and AT&T until epocrates is availble. Please expedite. It is hard to grasp the wait time in today’s technology.

  9. prasanth Says:

Working here on the midnight shift. Opened my browsed to look up something on the usual epocrates online site and lo and behold what do i see. Epocrates designed for the Iphone(albeit a web app) works pretty well. Probably better than the palm version I was using all those years.

  10. A Esau MD Says:

Ditto above. Will purchase the iphone when it runs Epocrates. There’s little doubt it will be the gadget of choice when it can run the software we need.
    It’s a no-brainer. Get it done!

  11. Jason, MD Says:

Many posters here must not understand the technology of the iPhone - the Apple iPhone has so far been closed to outside programming, but the SDK (Software Development Kit) - which is what programmers need to create programs for a particular device - will be released in February 2008. This means that after that time, 3rd party native applications (like epocrates and unlimited others) can be written for the iPhone. The FAQ on epocrates website has been updated to indicate this as well.

I absolutely love my iPhone and the numerous web applications (medical and non-medical) currently available - it has really helped me both in my practice and life and will only get better with firmware updates, web applications, and future native applications.

  12. Ed Hiatt,MD Says:

Will buy an iPhone the moment that it supports ePocrates, just like I replaced my Palm and phone with the Treo 650. ePocrates is essential to my work, and lack of iphone support for ePocrates is the only reason I haven’t made the move already.

  13. Daniel Hatter, MD Says:

I gave up my BlackBerry for an iPhone and was dismayed to learn that Epocrates doesn’t work on it but they now have a product for BlackBerry! I do keep an eye on iPhone web sites to see what kind of applications I can use in my practice. This morning I saw a post on http://www.touchtip.com about medical tools for the iPhone and they mention that Epocrates has a drug database for the iPhone. Well, at least it’s a start.

The article also mentions MacPractice software for practice management. I have a Mac office so maybe this will work well for me. Does anyone know anything about this software?

  14. Craig Says:

online.epocrates.com now presents an iPhone optimized interface. I have no idea when it went live, but it’s there. Check it out. Not the same as an one the phone app, but it’s a very nice interface nonetheless.

  15. Heather Ene, MD Says:

I will purchase the iPhone when it fully supports Epocrates.

  16. Phiroz Tarapore MD Says:

I am waiting to buy an iphone purely because of lack of epocrates support. Fix this and Apple will have a realistic shot at cornering the medical pda sector!

  17. Marcus Merriweather M.D. Says:

I love the iphone but I must keep my blackberry because i can’t run epocrates on iphone. Please help Apple guys. There are a lot of iphone lovers out there that practice medicine but we need epocrates.
    Please help

  18. Gmerice Hammond, Med student (MD june 2008) Says:

I drool over the ipone. Gotta have epocrates though. Once it’s there I’m in.

  19. Lawrence Says:

Apple’s sales will soar as soon as quality PDA software is available for the iPhone.

  20. John Lawrence M2 Says:

Steve Jobs just announced support for epocrates along with all the other enterprise/SDK stuff today

  21. Steve Chang Says:

It’s official! Epocrates is finally on the iPhone!!! http://www.geeknuz.com/nuz/2008/03/breaking-news-e.html

  22. Epocrates Says:

    Hi Epocrates Supporters!

It was recently announced that Epocrates is one of a limited number of developers who have been working directly with Apple to make its clinical content available on the iPhone/iTouch. This will enable healthcare professionals to always have immediate access to vital clinical information wherever and whenever they need it, regardless of Internet connectivity.

In the meantime, you can currently access Epocrates free online drug reference at m.epocrates.com with an Internet or WiFi connection.

**If you have already installed Apple’s iPhone or iTouch January update, you can now add an Epocrates Online shortcut to your home screen. To do this visit m.epocrates.com, click on the + sign at the bottom of the page. In the menu that appears, touch “Add to home screen”. Enter a name for the icon, then touch “Add” in the upper right corner.

    Best wishes,

    The Epocrates Team

Hi apple. I don’t have hospital wide wi-fi so the epocrates program available for iphone is not useful for me. use the ID portion frequently so I am waiting to purchase iphone asap….soon? any day? please…my palm is dying so I need to purchase soon…thanks

  24. J. Nicole Lederman Says:

    Buy now or later.
OK, getting very excited about epocrates on iphone but not sure when to buy. I’m not convinced by the whole 3G discussion that waiting is best. BUT, does anybody know if the off line version, when available, will be a memory hog? Will the current 16G iphone be adequate? My palm is dying over and over again and i am sick of needing to get it fixed or replaced.

  25. Terrance Johns, MD Says:

Love Epocrates. Would love to have the iphone but not until it can support the Epocrates PDA application. Please…please…make it happen soon!

  26. Sarah Parrott, D.O. Says:

My treo 650 has started acting up. I am ready to buy a new smartphone soon and am very much leaning toward the iphone, but as I can hit wifi access only on the two upper levels of my hospital (seven floors), I will have to choose MotoQ or Blackberry. Please, Apple or epocrates, design a program now!

  27. dave shatto Says:

epocrates is going on the iphone very soon, watch the update on apples website about the iphone. late june 08 i believe.

  28. Karen Shaul Says:

I am wanting to get the iPhone really bad. I can almost “taste” it. However, since it is so much more expensive than a lot of the other phones I can’t justify buying it without a good reason. So if it had epocrates on it then it would be a business expense since I’m a registered nurse and epocrates is very beneficial to me. Please, please put epocrates on the iPhone. Thanks.

  29. Gabriel Says:

Will not get off my Treo until Epocrates, and other palm medical sofware able to run on the iphone

  30. Loren McCoy, MD Says:

I am planning on buying the new iPhone 3G, but only when ePocrates becomes available for it without the need for the internet connection.

  31. aj Reilly Says:

I am so ready to buy an i phone, but I won’t until I can easily use Epocrates in my ICU. I do not want to carry my AT&T cell phone and my palm. I really want to carry one thing. I think if Apple makes the I phone as easy as my palm they will have a lot more healthcare customers.

  32. Suzanne Simmons, M.D. Says:

Any more word on Epocrates and iPhone?? I will buy the iPhone as soon as I can use epocrates with it… my colleagues say same.

Apple, we are a big market!! PLEASE help us!

  33. barry bersch M.D. Says:

When iphone supports Epocrates, I’ll kind of support Apple

  34. Akshay Shah Says:

Epocrates is now available free for the iPhone! Head to http://www.epocrates.com/products/rx/iphone.html for all the details.

  35. Dr's Husband Says:

Epocrates Rx will be available in the App Store! Just check out the video review from Engadget:

    http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/11/iphone-3g-review/

Kind of long-winded, so start looking at the 5:00 mark…

  36. Akshay Shah Says:

It’s out! You can download Epocrates from the App Store or read more at http://www.epocrates.com/products/rx/iphone.html. I’ve posted some screenshots at http://www.akshayshah.org/2008/07/epocrates-on-the-iphone/.

  37. Dr. Horatio Cabasares Says:

For surgeons like me who depend on Epocrates not only for daily care of patients but also for my continued daily learning experience in my spare time, a phone without epocrates would not be helpful. I have an aging Tre0 680 that I would love to replace with iPhone, but cannot do anything because I would not be able to function without the full epocrates program.
