I say 'Go for it!'. Developing an EMR can be a lot of fun and they are not particularly difficult applications to develop. They are basically a database and an interface to the database. Depending on the complexity of the project, you might be able to do it yourself. This will save the hassles of working on a team project and you also get to decide the future direction of the project yourself. My background is as a doctor and I am teaching myself to program by building an EMR. If you can find some friends who are programmers to help you out every now and then you can probably do it yourself.
