Re: Free EMR

I think there are a couple good resources available with lists of Open Source EMR projects:
SourceForge List
http://tkfp.sourceforge.net/links.html

I really think that open source is underdeveloped in Healthcare. However, there are now some big players starting to get involved.

Wikipedia about Open Source
http://www.informatics-review.com/wi...en_Source_EMRs

I also made a few of my own comments on it and some of my favorites on my EMR and Open Source Post

Re: Free EMR

Medscribbler Lite is a free EMR that is a full system including scheduling, document management, messaging, prescription writing etc. It was also the first EMR to have embedded handwriting for the Tablet Pc . It runs client server and has a backup module included. We do not keep records of how many use it but it seeems to be very popular among psychiatrists.

It is available free at http://www.medscribbler.com/Free_EMR.php. You have to be a doctor and it helps to know your UPIN and the correct information of your registration.

Re: Free EMR

Why do you have to be a doctor to get your EMR? Is this some arrangement you have with some organization? I was interested in trying it, but I'm not an MD.

Re: Free EMR

I think you can try it if you are a representing a doc who's interested in it. From the website it looks like there is an online demo open to anyone if you aren't able to download it.

Re: Free EMR

Yes, that is correct. We are just trying to limit calls and demos to those who have a true interest in buying Medscribbler, not just see how the handwriting technology works. While we are excited about how we have embedded handwriting, sharing that excitement with the curiousity seekers would waste a whole lot of money. For every doctor truely interested, even with the stated restrictions, we get at least one other who just wants to "look" and why can't we "help them install it", spend hour long distance calls, chew up our bandwith with a demo etc.

Those who truely state who they are, ie doctor or employed by a doctor have no trouble in us spending time with them. Others may try the partner route. The curious will remain curious.

I just signed up at this site and not sure what is the big deal about CEO mike's 'handwriting technology'?

With current tablet PC purchase nowadays, the Microsoft handwriting, freestyle drawing, notes taking software typically comes bundles (of course the sellers claims it's a 100$ value or more to sweeten the tablet sale).

The software works with all the newer windows software. It even works with Open source web base Oscar EMR client running in internet explorer! :-)

Suggestion:
Perhaps, the doctor gadgets website could provide the link & bandwidth for free downloading software for members under a policy similar to many 'free membership' website.

The download files are "as-is", no questions ask or answers, no discussion, no support.

That would serve members who just wants to download and test the 'free' software. The software developer would not have to entertain questions.

docs from the Great White North (Canada).

Like many in forums ala_tor gives no details about himself so comments have to be taken with a grain, Obviously ala_tor does not have a Tablet or he/she would know how ridiculous it is to suggest that anything bundled with the Tablet could be remotely useful for keeping patient records.

The comments about OSCAR seem to be from an OSCAR fan. OSCAR is a worthy program in its class and is considerably better than many (if not most)EMRs costing thousands of dollars. Its developer, David Chan, is a personal friend of over twenty years (although I haven't seen him in a while we do send very occassional emails.) If Tablets and handwriting is not the way for you check out OSCAR.

Re: Free EMR

I think ala_tor is right about being able to use tablets with any EMR's. The fact is that depending on how you use your tablet determines its benefit to you. I can do everything with a pen and a tablet that I can do with a mouse and keyboard. Some things are slower with a pen and tablet and some things are faster. This is what I think ala_tor meant to ask.

What would be the benefits gained by using the tablet handwriting recognition vs. a mouse and keyboard?

Your response would really take this thread way off target from the original open source subject, so it might fit better in its very own topic. Just my thoughts.
