RAM in a Tablet PC

I've been sad about the amount of RAM that comes in a Tablet. I think RAM is one of the most important keys to speed in a computer and usually the tablets are only coming with 512 MB of RAM. In fact, many of them are offered with only 256 MB of RAM. I have been doing some tests lately and seen that most programs work fine with 512 MB of RAM. However, I just got a new computer with 2 Gigs of RAM and I've been amazed how the RAM has just gotten eaten up. 2 Gigs of RAM is really plenty of RAM and I'm not even getting close to that. However, I'm using much more than 512 MB of Ram. I've only seen 1 gig of ram in any reasonably priced tablets. They don't even touch 2 gigs of ram yet. RAM has gotten cheap and I'm not sure why we can't get more RAM in these tablets.

How much RAM are you getting in your tablets? And how long are you going to reasonably be able to use that tablet?

Re: RAM in a Tablet PC

My HP TC4400 Tablet PC came with a single 512 stock, and I upgraded by adding a 1GBSODIMM. I considered replacing the 512, but didn't think that the difference between 1.5G and 2G justified the cost. When 2G SODIMMs become more reasonable, I plan to replace both RAM modules to upgrade to 4GB of RAM.

Re: RAM in a Tablet PC

Good thing these tablets are at the end of their life. I'll be glad when we can replace them with machines that have plenty of RAM. Lesson learned.

Re: RAM in a Tablet PC

I've found that new machines always require more RAM. My latest laptop, a Dell Inspiron 640m, is running Vista and I've just order a 4GB RAM replacement. The new OS and new versions of applications like Flash CS3 and 3D studio require more RAM to run at speeds similar to older versions running on XP.

The annoying thing about this laptop is that I will have to swap out the 2GB chips that it came with to get the new 4GB in.

I suspect the same will be true with newer tablets. They'll always be compromising to keep weight and price down so the new tablet will probably have less RAM than they should have.

Re: RAM in a Tablet PC

I've been ordering all our desktops with 4 GIG of RAM and so far so good. XP doesn't even support that much ram, but I'm sure in the next 4 years I won't have a choice but to switch to Vista.
