GNUmed medical record software

I believe I saw GNUmed missing on the Open Source medical software list. GNUmed is available free and open source for MS Windows, GNU/Linux and MacOSX. We are physicians from German, France, Canada, Australia and Spain and are looking into extending it to be usable in a variety of health sytems. For some reasons there is no developers from the US so we don't have any billing so far. I believe it can be added easily.

Have an nice day.

Re: GNUmed medical record software

How different is an EMR in those other countries compared to the US? I imagine it would be essentially the same. Although I can see your point about the billing. Although, I imagine their must be some governmental requirements even in countries with socialized medicine.

Wink Re: GNUmed medical record software

The EMR part is not that different. But many EMR are no EMR. They are smart frontends for billing. They don't care about medical concepts like health issues or disease episodes. They don't bother with (S) ubjective, (O)bjective, (A)sessment, (P)lan concepts for the record.

They support one lanuage and one health system. It is the 'not invented here' syndrome that keeps us from using it. No way to switch GUI language or coding systems (ICD 9/10). No way to switch billing engines.

They work well in their health system but nowhere else. That is what we avoid in GNUmed from day one. We have a long way to go feature wise because we make sure that GNUmed can be understood and maintained in 10 years.

We try not to model the database to fit the user interface but use PostgreSQL to make sure that even without a frontend patient data is not only secure but accessible as well.

Features will come quickly if one has a strong base. It's like designing a programming language for a specific application or design a programming language so one can write many programs with it.

So if any one wants to take a look at GNUmed and add billing for the US you are more then welcom.

I like what you're doing here. You're definitely meeting a different need and I think that something like this project could be the future of electronic charting. Have you worked or looked at other open source EMR projects out there. I wonder if you couldn't collaborate on some of the stuff.

Re: GNUmed medical record software

In they community we are in contact with the guys from various projects. It like with cars. From the outside they look alike but the engine .... Tell the guys from the US to use stick shift

You get the point. We will work together through data exchanged and idea exchange. GNUmed is capable of having a webinterface as well. So we hacked a proof of concept. But even here I guess it would be easier to just hack another one then reuse one of the existing.

It is however important to take a good look and avoid mistakes.

Re: GNUmed medical record software

I'm thinking of Fred Trotter (I think that's his name) in particular. I know that he is in the US and does open source medical software for a living. I just wondered if you'd talked with him about possibly collaborating.

I understand the stick shift phenomenon. I lived in Italy for 2 years and loved it.

Re: GNUmed medical record software

I have not yet talked to him but he seems to be one of the guys who get it.
It is on top of my list to get some talks going. We are in for the long run here but it is worth it.

To monitor the medical FOSS universe I have set up planet.gnumed.de so I don't miss any important news other than from GNUmed.
