Blackberry's are improving for medical programs but are still not as good as Windows Mobile for Palm OS models.
Do you know which programs in particular you need? PEPID works on blackberry but Skyscape and Epocrates don't:

I use a i-Mate K-JAM which is a nice PDA-phone combo. It's not too bulky so I can use it as a phone but it has a big screen, slide out keyboard and Windows Mobile so it runs everything.
There are versions of epocrates and PEPID and some others that are accessible via the web. You could therefore access them via a web connection on a blackberry if you were so inclined.
If I were buying at the moment I would probably go for a PalmOS Treo although I am happy with my WM K-JAM.
Let me know what you decide on.
