Compatibility with PDA software

Hi all,

I\'m debating whether to purchase a proper PDA, a small phone/PDA (like the O2 mini), or a WM2005 smartphone (i-mate SP5). Currently I\'m leaning towards the smartphone for its size and portability, however I\'m concerned whether software like epocrates, Harrison\'s, etc will work on it. I\'ve read conflicting reports on Pocket PC software running on smartphones, even with the common APIs of WM2005.

Has anyone had any experience with running Pocket PC medical aps on a WM2005 smartphone?

Thanks for you help.

Re:Compatibility with PDA software

I have an Audiovox xv6600 running pocketpc 2003SE. Most programs seem to work but I know that Uptodate does not work.

I have the Treo 650, runs Palm. I use epocrates, including freeCME without any problem. It runs PalmOne v.5.2H.

Re: Compatibility with PDA software

At the moment there are 2 seperate versions of Windows Mobile for devices with a Phone:

Windows Mobile for Smartphone
Windows Mobile for Pocket PC Phone Edition

The Smartphone version is not compatible with the Pocket PC version so if you buy a Smartphone be warned that most medical software will not work on it.

The situation is very confusing especially as Palm are calling the Treo 700w a Smartphone when it actually runs Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone edition. This means it will run most medical software as it is not really a Smartphone (according to Microsoft).

Check carefully when you buy a device with a phone that it runs the full Pocket PC version of Windows Mobile.

The BenQ P50 runs Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PC Phone Edition which means it will run most medical software applications such as Epocrates, Harrison's etc.

The i-mate SP5 runs Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone Edition which is not compatible with most medical software applications such as Epocrates, Harrison's etc.

Re: Compatibility with PDA software

In addition to the there are other operating systems that run on devices with Phones such as Symbian and Palm. The Palm Treo 600/650 will run most medical software. Symbian 'Smartphones' will not.

Re: Compatibility with PDA software

Have a look at www.handheldmed.com - they have their products in smartphone format as well as Pocket PC I believe. They have quite a good range.
