What Essential PDA Reference Software Should a Medical Doctor Own

I set my friend up with a new Palm Treo. What essential medical or drug reference software should he own.

I am new to PDA software for professionals and would like to know the top 10.

Thanks

Joe

I'd recommend taking a look at the PDA version of UpToDate. It's an 'Evidence Based' clinical support tool that is very popular with doctors. It is fairly pricey and some institutions already have licences for their docs so do some research before buying.

Subscription applications requiring payment:

Epocrates full suite with coder and submodules.
The Medical Letter and The Medical Letter Treatment Guidelines (essentially an unbiased anonymous Consumer Reports style assessment of often worthless new medications).

Listed below are only freeware Palm OS apps.

If you prefer an RPN calculator, seek Kalk.
ChemTable.
Eponyms.
MedCalc.
MedRules.
PalmEKG (ancient, perhaps hard to find, but a useful primer)
Shots 2008.
USDA Foods.

BackupBuddy is freeware to back up the handheld in a format from which it can be fully restored after a hard reset. A commercial version costing more is available, and I recommend it. (Those who can learn from the mistakes of others back up their handhelds frequently before they experience disastrous data loss.)

One can modify - I don't say hack - the Palm to accept the original Graffiti, which is superior in the view of many, including me, for text entry. Search the BrightHand forums for details if interested.

Check Skyscape.com. They have the largest selection of PDA references and support the most platforms including Blackberry and iPhone. They just released the 5MCC 2009 which is a popular diagnosis and treatment reference. ePocrates free drug database is good to have also...
